A small jeremiad

I walked a little,
I talked a little,
I slept a little,
I wept a little,

So little did I live,
So little did I give,
So little was this life,
A short journey of an endless strife.

Little gems of pleasure,
From a hidden treasure,
Little joys in scant measure,
From a guilty leisure.

So little did I live,
So little did I give,
So little was this life,
A short journey of an endless strife.

Lifelines were true,
But fate wasn’t,
Dreams were real,
But the world wasn’t.

So little did I live,
So little did I give,
So little was this life,
A short journey of an endless strife.

But to think over again,
I find it all in vain:
So little did I gain,
By this plaintive complaint.
